Following news that the Biden-Harris Administration has signaled the U.S. will support limits on plastic production in the ongoing global plastics treaty negotiations, Marce Gutiérrez-Graudiņš, Azul’s Founder and Executive Director, issued the following statement:
“This is a welcome change and fully in line with the overwhelming majority of Latino voters across the country – from California to Texas, Georgia and Pennsylvania – who are calling for an ambitious global plastics treaty. Latino voters have stated, categorically, that they want urgent action on mitigating and addressing the issue of plastic pollution. The 2024 National Azul Poll has proven that this is a bipartisan issue nationwide, and our communities will vote accordingly. Azul urges the U.S. Delegation to continue working towards an ambitious treaty without voluntary measures, addressing plastic production and overconsumption. We welcome the current efforts of the Biden-Harris administration to address plastic production, and we hope that the Latino voices highlighted by our poll will help drive this and any future administration to end plastic pollution.”
In July, Azul released findings from the 2024 National Azul Poll: Latinos and the Ocean, the second-ever nationwide poll on Latino viewpoints on ocean protection, policies and recreation. The results showed that Latino voters want governments to take bold action on plastics, and they are willing to pay more out of their own pocket to advance ocean justice.

Take Action: In March 2024, Azul sent a letter to the U.S. Department of State, calling on them to take a leadership role and support a strong Global Plastics Treaty that reduces plastic pollution and protects the health of communities and the environment across the nation – and around the globe. Take action with Azul by signing our petition to the Department of State!
