En El Mar: Listen to the New Podcast Promoting Ocean Justice and Conservation in the Latinx Communities
Roco Pachukote, an activist and talented member of Maldita Vecindad teams up with Azul – a California-based grassroots organization dedicated to ocean justice – for a series aimed at raising awareness to protect our ocean and coasts.
San Francisco, CA (November 15, 2022) – The first four episodes of the new podcast podcast “En El Mar” premiere today on all podcast streaming services – the eight-part series was created by Azul and produced by Mixto.
Hosted by Roco Pachukote, a leading musician and activist and founder of one of Mexico’s most influential rock bands: La Maldita Vecindad, and Marce Gutiérrez-Graudiņš, founder and executive director of Azul, an environmental justice organization working to promote ocean justice and conservation in Latinx communities, have teamed up to host the new program.
The mission of En El Mar – which is also the name of Azul’s album that debuted in 2021 – is to raise awareness about the importance of caring for and conserving our coasts and ocean, and also aims to bring Latinx perspectives and participation to ocean conservation. The series, which premieres ahead of global climate talks such as COP 27 and COP 15, explores the various threats facing our ocean and coasts – from plastic pollution to overfishing to climate change – while offering creative solutions coming from Latinx communities.
“Teaming up with Roco to share the rich experience, history and commitment to marine conservation within our Latinos Marinos community is Azul’s way of embracing art for ocean justice at a cultural level within our Latinx communities. We look forward to offering these stories to the world, while reaffirming our people’s deep connection to the ocean and the music that celebrates the sea,” said Gutiérrez-Graudiņš.
In the first episode, hosts Pachukote and Gutiérrez-Graudiņš touch on peacefulness, dance and the sea as they delve into how the En El Mar podcast came to be, setting listeners up for interviews with acclaimed journalist María Elena Salinas, professor Richard Cudney, as well as professor and researcher Octavio Aburto-Oropeza, adjunct professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and narrator of Mares Mexicanos.
The following episodes dive into the importance of the role our ocean plays in the fight against climate change. First, the global biodiversity target to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030, known as #30For2030, is introduced in a style that can be understood by all audiences, and then we discuss one of the biggest impacts of climate change: sea level rise and how it affects all of us, not just coastal communities. The fourth episode explores how profound the problem of plastic pollution is for our health and what actions listeners can take.
This is a podcast you won’t want to miss. You can listen to En El Mar on Spotify, Deezer, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to your podcasts. Be sure to subscribe because life is better en el mar.
