Despite local and environmental opposition, Poseidon is pushing to build a massive $1.4 billion desalination plant in Huntington Beach, California. The plant would become one of the country’s biggest seawater desalination plants, but the company still cannot definitively say who will buy the 50 million gallons a day of drinking water it wants to produce on the Orange County coast.
The truth is: Orange County doesn’t need the water –the most recent water plan indicates the County can meet its water needs without the plan– and it would dump 50 million gallons of toxic brine dumped into the ocean every day for 50 years!
If approved, the new plant’s operations would be harmful to marine wildlife, drive emissions higher, and would hike ratepayer bills up as the company privatizes water as a resource.
The Regional Water Quality Control Board is holding a final hearing on April 23rd (could extend to April 26th) to review the plant and vote on permits. Check out our latest video (below) and sign the petition to say NO to Poseidon.
