SAN DIEGO, CA (September 17, 2025) — Azul, an ocean justice organization working with Latino communities to protect coastal and marine ecosystems, celebrates Latino Heritage Month by elevating the powerful role Latinos play in protecting the planet.
Founded in 2011, Azul has championed community-driven advocacy that has secured groundbreaking ocean conservation policy victories at the local, national, and international levels. By centering Latino voices and leadership, Azul ensures that ocean conservation is inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the communities most impacted by climate and environmental injustice.
“Latino communities have always been deeply connected to the ocean as workers, cultural stewards, and advocates for justice,” said Marce Gutiérrez-Graudiņš. “This Latino Heritage Month, we want to uplift the stories of our communities’ leadership and resilience in the fight to protect our oceans for future generations.”
From advancing bans on harmful single-use plastics in California to pushing for equitable marine protections globally, Azul continues to lead with a model that puts frontline communities first. With climate change intensifying threats to coastal regions and marine life, Azul’s mission is more urgent than ever.
Azul offers concrete ways for the public to help protect the ocean year-round:
• Sign petitions and support campaigns to reduce ocean pollution.
• Participate in leadership development and advocacy days.
• Contribute to Azul’s ocean justice efforts through donations.
